Chairman of Heirs Holdings and United Bank for Africa (UBA), Mr Tony Elumelu, has reaffirmed the commitment of African leaders to driving the continent’s development through homegrown solutions, stressing that Africa’s future lies firmly in the hands of Africans.
Elumelu made the remarks during a strategy session of the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), where he joined former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, both founding members of the Corporation, to review AFC’s journey and growing impact on the continent.
According to Elumelu, the session provided an opportunity to reflect on AFC’s evolution since its establishment, assess its achievements so far, and challenge the leadership and management of the Corporation to rise to Africa’s growing expectations, particularly in the areas of capital mobilisation and infrastructure development.
He noted that AFC has played a significant role in bridging Africa’s infrastructure financing gap, but emphasised the need for renewed urgency and strategic action in the face of current economic and developmental challenges confronting the continent.
“There has never been a more important time to remind ourselves that the future of our continent is in our hands,” Elumelu said, adding that Africa’s development cannot be outsourced and must be driven by Africans themselves.
The strategy session underscored a shared resolve among AFC’s founding leaders to strengthen the institution’s capacity to mobilise long-term capital and accelerate sustainable infrastructure development across Africa.
