Former Governor of Abia State and Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has dismissed claims that he opposes the electronic transmission of election results, describing as misleading a viral video being circulated online.
In a statement titled “Clarity on My Position Regarding Electronic Transmission of Results,” Kalu expressed concern over what he called the deliberate recycling of a five-year-old Senate video to misrepresent his current stance in the 10th Senate.
The lawmaker said it was “appalling and surprising” that some individuals, particularly young people, would circulate footage from the 9th Senate and present it as a recent contribution made during plenary this week.
According to him, a simple observation of the video shows senators wearing face masks, an indication that it was recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
“That submission was made within the context and realities of that time,” he stated.
Kalu clarified that at no point in the 10th Senate—whether during public hearings, plenary sessions, or executive meetings—has he opposed the electronic transmission of election results.
On the contrary, he said he has consistently supported electronic transmission as provided for in Section 60(3), citing significant technological advancements over the past five years. He added that his position aligns with that of the Senate President and several lawmakers across party lines.
The senator alleged that as the country approaches another election cycle, “serial election losers and desperate political actors” may attempt to distort facts and mislead the public for political advantage.
He, however, expressed confidence that Nigerians would not be swayed by what he described as recycled falsehoods.
Kalu urged the public to remain vigilant and resist attempts by political actors to spread misinformation.
