Philip Shuaib has emphasized the critical role of healthcare in advancing sports development in Nigeria, following a strategic meeting with a delegation from Alliance Hospital led by Dr. Christopher Otabor.
Shuaib disclosed that discussions with the medical team focused on the future of sports medicine in the country, stressing that sustainable sports growth cannot be achieved without robust healthcare systems to support athletes.
According to him, there is a renewed commitment to restoring global best practices in the sector, particularly in ensuring proper medical screening for athletes before competitions. He noted that prioritizing athletes’ health and safety remains fundamental to achieving excellence in sports.
Speaking of ongoing efforts at the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Shuaib revealed plans to establish a modern medical framework, including the upgrade of existing facilities and the creation of medical units across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
He, however, said that government efforts alone would not be sufficient to drive the needed transformation, calling for strategic partnerships with credible private institutions such as Alliance Hospital to build a sustainable and efficient sports ecosystem.
Shuaib added that the overarching goal is to develop a system that safeguards athletes, boosts performance, and positions Nigeria as a leading force in global sports development.
He noted that the initiative marks the beginning of broader reforms aimed at strengthening sports medicine and infrastructure nationwide.
