A former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has launched a scathing criticism of Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, accusing him of associating with individuals allegedly linked to corruption.
In a statement released on his Facebook, Omokri specifically referenced former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, alleging that Obi’s relationship with such figures contradicts his previous stance against what he described as “structures of criminality.”
Omokri further claimed that Malami had been linked to assets worth ₦212 billion, which were allegedly ordered forfeited by a court as proceeds of corruption. He questioned Obi’s judgment, arguing that such associations undermine his credibility as a reform-minded politician.
The former aide also criticised Obi’s past campaign rhetoric, particularly his appeals to religious institutions, suggesting that recent developments cast doubt on the sincerity of those messages.
In a more controversial remark, Omokri drew a comparison involving notorious criminal Lawrence Anini, implying that Obi might have extended support to such figures if given the opportunity.
He also referenced Nigeria’s military era under Sani Abacha, alleging that Obi’s political associations reflect a return to a period marked by widespread corruption.
As of the time of filing this report, Obi and his representatives have not issued any official response to the allegations.
