Oyo 2027: Hamzat storms police command hq days after attack on supporters

The governorship candidate of Accord Party in Oyo State, Oriyomi Hamzat, has led members of his campaign council on a courtesy visit to the Oyo State Police Command headquarters, barely a week an attack on his supporters in Ibadan claimed one life.

His campaign spokesperson, Samuel Kehinde Ibikunle, confirmed Tuesday’s visit in a statement.

Daily Sun recalls that on Wednesday, October 14, suspected hoodlums attacked supporters who were welcoming Hamzat back from the United Kingdom.

The attack occurred around Molete Under Bridge, Ibadan South-West LGA, shortly after the supporters left Molete heading towards Iwo Road where Hamzat’s Agidigbo FM is located.

The state police command confirmed a 40-year-old man, Azeez Tajudeen, was fatally injured in the attack.

At Tuesday’s meeting, Hamzat expressed appreciation for the command’s swift response to the attack and commended the police for its efforts in maintaining peace and order across the state.

He acknowledged the leadership of CP Abimbola Olugbenga for his commitment to ensuring security and public safety.

The Accord candidate stressed the importance of sustained collaboration between political actors and security agencies in promoting a peaceful political atmosphere especially as campaigns gather momentum.

Hamzat sought the continued cooperation and support of the police command to ensure that his campaign activities, including rallies and public engagements across the 33 local government areas of Oyo State, are conducted peacefully and without disruption.

He reiterated the importance of protecting lives and property, safeguarding democratic participation and ensuring that every political party and candidate can exercise their constitutional rights without fear of violence or intimidation.

In his response, CP Abimbola Olugbenga reassured Hamzat of the police command’s commitment to providing a level playing field for all political parties and candidates, emphasising that the Nigeria Police Force remains neutral and non-partisan.

The CP reaffirmed the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order and urged all political stakeholders to conduct activities peacefully and within the ambit of the law, including giving at least 48 hours notice before processions to enable adequate security arrangements.
