Meranda Returns as Deputy Speaker, Adewale Retains Majority Leader

After 49 days in office, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda has resigned as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, following the intervention of party leaders in the ongoing leadership crisis.

In her resignation speech, Meranda expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, emphasizing her commitment to the institution. “I will not depart from what my father taught me. I resign as Speaker after careful consideration. I am a good student of political history, and I must protect this institution. I have made history as the first female Speaker of this Assembly. I am grateful for your support,” she said.

Lawmakers took turns commending Meranda’s leadership.

Hon. Aro Moshood praised her dedication: “You presided over legislative business with passion and punctuality.”

Hon. Oladipupo Ajomale acknowledged her motherly role: “Nobody will forget your impact. We are proud of you.”

Hon. Bonu Solomon (Badagry I) expressed admiration: “We have seen the changes in leadership. We all love you and believe you will rise higher.”

Hon. Age Sulaimon added: “In your short time as Speaker, you touched many lives. You have our full support.”

In an emotional moment, Hon. Subur Oluwa broke into tears as he appreciated Meranda’s leadership style.

Hon. Kehinde Joseph reflected on her tenure: “Today marks 49 days since your election as Speaker. You showed resilience despite challenges. Your name is written in gold.”

Hon. Abiodun Orekoya described her as “a woman who led as a mother,” while Hon. Tijani Surajudeen commended her “demonstration of good leadership.”

Deputy Whip, Hon. Sani Okanlawon, recognized her “capacity and courage,” highlighting her contributions to staff welfare and governance.

Hon. Oshifila (Amuwo-Odofin) applauded her leadership, calling her “the pride of our gender.”

Hon. Desmond Elliot, overwhelmed with emotion, also shed tears during the farewell tributes.

Hon. Abiodun Tobun reassured Meranda: “Lagosians and the Assembly staff stand behind you. You are a hero of democracy, a winner, and an achiever.”

Hon. Temitope Adewale commended her loyalty and sacrifice: “You restored peace and confidence in us. You are a victim of circumstances, but you never betrayed us. You have a big heart.”

Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa II) acknowledged her groundbreaking achievement as the first female Speaker: “In 49 days, you shattered the glass ceiling. You brought peace. The party is supreme.”

As part of the leadership restructuring, Hon. Sani Okanlawon (Ifako-Ijaiye) stepped down as Deputy Chief Whip. Hon. David Setonji resigned as Chief Whip and returned as Deputy Chief Whip. Hon. Richard Kasumu retained his position as Deputy Majority Leader, while Hon. Adewale Temitope remained Majority Leader. Hon. Fatal Mojeed also resigned as Deputy Speaker and returned as Chief Whip.
