Former senator and ex-member of the Red Chamber, Shehu Sani, has reacted to the recent statement by immediate past President Muhammadu Buhari, in which he claimed to have left office with the same amount of physical wealth as he had when he assumed power in 2015.
In a post on his official Facebook page, Sani dismissed the relevance of Buhari’s personal wealth declaration, insisting that the focus should instead be on the condition of the Nigerian people after Buhari’s eight-year rule.
“The Almighty Allah knows better about his claim, his family or relations. I think what should matter most is the condition of the people who elected him after their years of sacrifices, suffering and struggle before his ultimate victory,” Sani wrote.
The former lawmaker stressed that Buhari enjoyed an unprecedented level of public support, saying, “I don’t know of any politician who the masses contributed their money and sacrificed their lives to see to him thrusted to power.”
Sani questioned the outcomes of Buhari’s administration, asking: “When he ascended and left power; have the masses fared better? Are they safer? Are their regions more developed? Are they more prosperous? Have their economies improved? Are their lives better?”
He concluded by suggesting that Buhari’s personal lifestyle is less significant compared to the controversies that surrounded key institutions under his leadership.
“His claim of prudence and Spartan life matters less than what happened at the CBN and other parastatals under his watch,” he added.
