NOA, NELFUND Raise Alarm Over Withheld Student Loans by Universities, Banks

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) have raised concerns over the alleged withholding of approved student loan funds by some universities and banks.

Director General of NOA, Lanre Issa-Onilu, disclosed that certain higher institutions have reportedly prevented students from sitting for examinations due to non-payment of fees—despite confirmation that NELFUND had already disbursed the approved loans. In many cases, students are forced to make payments out of pocket, only to later discover that their loans had been paid.

Issa-Onilu also revealed that some schools impose additional charges under the guise of ‘processing fees,’ further compounding the students’ financial burden.

He stated that these findings have been reported to relevant anti-corruption agencies for investigation and appropriate action.
