The Lagos State Government has announced that over two million passengers have been transported via the Blue Line Rail since its launch, while state-run buses continue to move an average of 42,000 commuters daily.
Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, made this known during the Year 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa. The briefing, which marked the second anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term, highlighted major achievements in the transport sector under the THEMES Plus Agenda.
Osiyemi stated that the Lagos State Transport Policy, launched in May 2024, has entered its implementation phase, focusing on inclusivity, safety, affordability, and sustainability.
Speaking on rail development, the Commissioner revealed that Phase I of the Blue Line Rail (Marina to Mile 2) has recorded over two million passengers, while work is ongoing on Phase II (Mile 2 to Okokomaiko). He also noted that Phase I of the Red Line (Agbado to Oyingbo) is now operational, boasting eight stations and additional rolling stock, with Phase II (Oyingbo to the National Theatre for linkage with the Blue Line) currently underway.
In the area of bus transportation, Osiyemi said over 60 million commuters have used state-owned buses since 2019, with daily ridership now surpassing 40,000. He added that new buses will soon be deployed, with Quality Bus Corridors under construction. The Abule Egba Bus Terminal has also been commissioned to further enhance service delivery.
On water transportation, he announced that 15 locally-built Omibus ferries have been deployed and are currently operational. The Ijegun Egba Terminal is now open, while the OMI EKO project—executed in partnership with the French Development Agency (AFD)—is expected to deliver 25 terminals and 78 electric ferries. Over 280,000 passengers have used ferry services in the past year, and 12 boats have been upgraded to meet international safety standards.
Highlighting road infrastructure and traffic management initiatives, Osiyemi said 49 junction improvement projects have been completed, with ongoing works at Ikorodu, Iju, and Allen-Opebi-Toyin. He noted the deployment of solar-powered traffic lights, 67.9km of road markings, construction of new medians and lay-bys, and the provision of 3,941 parking slots.
He further disclosed that the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras have detected over 470,000 traffic violations. The Vehicle Inspection Service has issued over one million roadworthiness certificates, while the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI) has trained more than 32,000 drivers.
Additionally, he noted that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has trained over 800 personnel, evacuated more than 100 broken-down vehicles, and revived its school safety advocacy programme in 59 schools.
