Veteran President Yoweri Museveni has been declared the winner of Uganda’s just-concluded presidential election, extending his grip on power into a fifth decade.
Uganda’s Electoral Commission announced the results at a ceremony held in the capital, Kampala, on Saturday, stating that Museveni secured just under 72 per cent of the total votes cast.
His closest challenger, popular musician-turned-politician Bobi Wine, garnered 24 per cent of the vote, according to the official results.
Museveni’s victory further consolidates his long-standing leadership of the East African nation, where he has remained in power since 1986.
