The Lagos State House of Assembly witnessed a dramatic shift in leadership when Mojisola Meranda emerged as the first female Speaker, following the removal of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. Her tenure, though brief—just 49 days—left a lasting impact on the legislative chamber.
Obasa’s removal stemmed from allegations of misappropriation of funds and high-handedness, leading to a unanimous decision among lawmakers to install Meranda. In less than two months, she fostered unity, improved legislative processes, and strengthened relationships between lawmakers and Assembly staff.
Her resignation on March 3, 2025, was met with an outpouring of emotions. Lawmakers and staff, who had come to respect and admire her leadership, shed tears as she stepped down. Even journalists covering the event were deeply moved.
Lawmakers’ Tributes to Mojisola Meranda
Hon. Aro Moshood praised her commitment: “You presided over legislative business with passion and punctuality.”
Hon. Oladipupo Ajomale acknowledged her nurturing leadership: “Nobody will forget your impact. We are proud of you.”

Hon. Abiodun Orekoya described her as “a woman who led as a mother,” while Hon. Tijani Surajudeen commended her “demonstration of good leadership.”
Deputy Whip, Hon. Sani Okanlawon, recognized her “capacity and courage,” especially in staff welfare and governance.
Hon. Oshifila (Amuwo-Odofin) called her “the pride of our gender.”
Hon. Desmond Elliot (Surulere 2) was overwhelmed with emotion and joined others in shedding tears.
Hon. Abiodun Tobun (Epe) reassured Meranda: “Lagosians and Assembly staff stand behind you. You are a hero of democracy, a winner, and an achiever.”

Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa II) celebrated her historic achievement: “In 49 days, you shattered the glass ceiling. You brought peace. The party is supreme.”
The Politics Behind Her Exit
While Meranda’s leadership was widely appreciated, her removal was not the will of the lawmakers. The reinstatement of Obasa as Speaker came after pressure from President Bola Tinubu, despite resistance from lawmakers and Assembly staff.
Some lawmakers played a pivotal role in Obasa’s return, including Hon. Nureni Akinsanya (Mushin 2), Sa’heed Olumo (Ajeromi Ifelodun 1), Noheed Adams (Eti-Osa 1), Hon. Olayinka Kazeem (Mushin 2), and Abdulkareem Jubreel (Agege 2). Their actions will remain a key reference point in Lagos Assembly history.
Mojisola Meranda’s 49-day leadership was more than just a transition—it was a moment of transformation. Her legacy as the first female Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly will not be forgotten.
