Peter Obi Pays Tribute to Pope Francis at Vatican Ceremony

Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, joined thousands of mourners, dignitaries, and religious leaders at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome to pay his final respects to His Holiness, Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21.

In a statement, Obi described the lying-in-state ceremony as a “moment of deep reflection,” honoring the life and legacy of a leader he said embodied humility, simplicity, and selfless service.

“Pope Francis was more than a Pontiff; he was a moral light in a world darkened by inequality and indifference,” Obi said. “His life was a testament to leadership as a sacred duty—rooted in compassion, truth, and service to the poor and marginalised.”

Obi revealed a personal connection to the late Pope through his involvement in Scholars Occultantes, an international circle of thinkers founded by Francis during his time as Archbishop. He credited the organisation with deepening his understanding of ethical leadership and social transformation.

The former Anambra State governor also recalled three personal encounters with Pope Francis, which he described as transformative. “He radiated peace and inspired faith. His presence was a quiet yet powerful reminder of the divine responsibility that leadership entails,” Obi noted.

Calling on African political, religious, and community leaders, Obi urged a collective reflection on the values Pope Francis championed. “Let this moment not just be one of mourning, but a call to lead with conscience, walk with the people, and govern with love,” he said.

Obi concluded his tribute with a prayer for Pope Francis’ soul and a hope that his legacy continues to inspire selfless service around the world.
