The Lagos State University (LASU) Senate has banned signing-out funfairs by final-year students, citing gross misconduct and disruption of academic activities during past celebrations.
The decision was reached at the Senate’s 306th Statutory Meeting held on Thursday, January 25, 2024, where members considered a report detailing students’ unruly behaviour during signing-out events.
According to the report, graduating students engaged in actions such as drinking alcohol, smoking weed and shisha, playing loud music with DJs, dressing indecently, and inviting non-students onto campus. The activities reportedly disrupted ongoing examinations and coincided with visits by National Universities Commission (NUC) accreditation teams, while also causing traffic congestion and littering the campus.
The Senate condemned the actions in strong terms and resolved that: All final-year students must henceforth sign an undertaking not to hold any signing-out funfair or party.
Where a signing-out event is permitted, it must exclude music, external food or drinks, invited guests, and canopies or tents.
Any student or group of students who violates these rules will be rusticated for one academic session, with all final-year examinations cancelled and repeated at their own cost.
The University maintained that these measures are aimed at preserving decorum, protecting the institution’s image, and ensuring that academic activities remain undisturbed.
