Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has encouraged members of Generation Z to take active roles in Nigeria’s political process, reminding them of the constitutional ages required to contest for elective positions.
In a post shared on social media, the outspoken lawmaker listed the minimum age requirements for various political offices as stipulated by law:
President, 35 years; Governor, 35 years; Senator, 35 years; House of Representatives, 25 years; House of Assembly, 25 years; Council Chairman, 30 years; and Councillor, 25 years.
Sani noted that many of Nigeria’s current leaders were around the same age as today’s Gen Z when democracy was restored in 1999. He, therefore, urged young Nigerians to channel some of their time away from social media towards building political engagement and leadership skills.
“Most of the people you see in power today were almost your age mates in 1999. Spare some time from social media and take up the challenge,” he advised.
The senator, known for his advocacy for youth inclusion and good governance, concluded his message with words of encouragement: “Wishing you the best.”
