Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reiterated his administration’s commitment to transforming the state’s transport and aviation landscape, announcing major progress on ongoing rail projects and plans for a new international airport.
Speaking on Tuesday at the 3rd FAAN National Aviation Conference, the governor joined President Bola Ahmed Tinubu—represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume—to discuss the future of Nigeria’s aviation sector.
Sanwo-Olu said the conference theme, “Elevating the Nigerian Aviation Industry through Investment, Partnership and Global Engagements,” reinforces the collaborative efforts needed to advance aviation infrastructure across the country.
He highlighted Lagos’ role as Nigeria’s busiest aviation gateway, noting that aviation significantly drives the economy, connectivity and competitiveness of the state.
He added that these realities inform the government’s investments in an integrated transport system linking rail, road, water and air.
According to the governor, the Blue and Red Line rail systems are already transporting thousands of passengers daily, while the forthcoming Green Line will connect Marina to the Lekki corridor and the proposed Lekki–Epe International Airport.
Describing the new airport as a strategic infrastructure project, Sanwo-Olu said it will decongest the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, support the rapidly expanding Lekki industrial axis and reinforce Lagos’ position as West Africa’s leading aviation and logistics hub. He emphasised that the project is being designed with climate responsibility, strong community engagement and long-term economic benefits.
Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed Lagos State’s readiness to continue working with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Federal Government to develop a safer and more competitive aviation sector.
“To our investors and airline partners, Lagos is open for business, and our vision is clear,” he said.
