EFCC Denies Sahara Reporters’ Claim on Lawyer’s Arrest, Accuses Oddiri of Misleading Public

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed as false and misleading a report by Sahara Reporters alleging that the Department of State Services (DSS) arrested lawyer Moses Oddiri in Lagos on the orders of the EFCC Chairman over a petition concerning diversion of community funds.

In a statement on Thursday, the Commission said the publication, titled “DSS Abducts Lawyer Moses Oddiri in Lagos After Petition on Diversion Of Funds By EFCC Chairman,” was a deliberate attempt to misinform the public and malign the leadership of the EFCC.

According to the Commission, the controversy revolves around funds paid into the bank accounts of two Host Community Benefit Trusts (HCBTs) in line with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and guidelines from the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

The EFCC said Oddiri had insisted that the Niger Delta Host Community Trust Fund be diverted into the account of his Non-Governmental Organisation—an action the agency described as illegal and contrary to the PIA.

The EFCC explained that its Chairman had ordered a thorough investigation after uncovering delays by some companies in remitting the mandated funds to the host communities in Delta State. The investigation reportedly compelled defaulting companies to comply, and payments were eventually made in 2024 directly into the designated HCBT accounts.

The Commission said Oddiri has since launched a campaign against the EFCC and its Chairman because the funds were not paid into his NGO’s account. In response, the EFCC convened stakeholder meetings in Lagos and Abuja involving community leaders, regulators, and oil company representatives.

During one of the sessions, the EFCC Chairman emphasized that the Commission’s responsibility is to prevent diversion of community funds and ensure they are used for essential development projects such as electricity and potable water.

Describing Oddiri’s allegations as “gangsteric” and “malicious,” the EFCC noted that his claims had circulated repeatedly on social media platforms, including previous reports by Sahara Reporters. The Commission said it is initiating legal action against the latest publication by the online outlet.

The agency further stated that similar accusations had been levelled against Heritage Energy Operational Services (HEOS) Ltd., and that both the EFCC Chairman and HEOS have ongoing legal cases against Oddiri, alongside a petition lodged with the DSS.

Reaffirming its commitment to due process, the EFCC urged the media to verify information and avoid being used by individuals seeking to influence public opinion through blackmail.

The Commission assured Nigerians that it remains focused on its mandate and will continue to act in the best interest of the nation.
