The United States has carried out airstrikes against Islamic State (ISIS) targets in Northwest Nigeria, President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday night.
In a statement issued in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief, Trump said the strikes were directed at ISIS elements accused of attacking and killing civilians in the region, particularly Christian communities.
He described the operation as a decisive response following earlier warnings to the group to halt the violence.
According to the statement, the strikes were executed by U.S. military forces and involved multiple coordinated attacks on identified terrorist positions.
Trump said the action demonstrated Washington’s resolve to combat what he described as radical Islamic terrorism and prevent the group from gaining further ground.
The U.S. President praised the American military for carrying out what he termed successful operations and reiterated his administration’s commitment to counterterrorism efforts globally.
