The Nigeria Police Force has congratulated retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), Cecilia Adebisi Ugowe, as she marks her 90th birthday, celebrating a life distinguished by service, courage, and enduring contributions to policing in Nigeria.
The statement was signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
In a statement, the Force described Ugowe as a trailblazer who occupies a unique place in the history of the Nigeria Police Force, having risen through the ranks at a time when leadership opportunities for women in policing were severely limited.
Her career, it said, stands as a testament to perseverance, discipline, and professional excellence.
Through merit and commitment, Ugowe earned appointments to several senior command positions, ultimately becoming the first female officer to attain the rank of Deputy Inspector-General of Police.
She also broke multiple barriers as the first female Commissioner of Police (CP), first female Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), and first woman to serve as Force Secretary.
Beyond the offices she held, the Force noted that her lasting legacy lies in the opportunities she created for future generations.
Her service broadened participation within the institution, strengthened professionalism, and underscored that leadership in policing is defined by competence, integrity, and dedication rather than convention.
As the Nigeria Police Force reflects on her life and career at this landmark age, it acknowledged that her contributions continue to inspire serving and retired officers, particularly women, to pursue excellence and leadership in service to the nation.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, on behalf of the officers and men of the Force, wished retired DIG Ugowe continued good health, peace, and happiness as she celebrates ninety years of a life that has left an indelible mark on the institution and the nation.
