President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed that Nigeria’s newly enacted tax laws will be implemented as planned, dismissing suggestions of a possible halt or reversal of the reforms.
The President said the tax laws that came into effect on June 26, 2025, alongside other related Acts scheduled to commence on January 1, 2026, remain on course, describing the reforms as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to establish a fair, competitive and resilient fiscal framework for the country.
According to him, the reforms are not intended to impose additional tax burdens on Nigerians but to achieve a structural reset of the tax system, promote harmonisation across tax regimes, protect citizens’ dignity, and strengthen the social contract between government and the people.
“I urge all stakeholders to support the implementation phase, which is now firmly in the delivery stage,” the President said.
Addressing public debates over alleged changes to certain provisions of the new tax laws, Tinubu noted that no substantial issue has been identified that would justify disrupting the reform process. He stressed that public trust is built over time through consistent and well-considered decisions, rather than through what he described as “premature, reactive measures.”
The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to due process and respect for the integrity of laws duly enacted.
He added that the Presidency would continue to work closely with the National Assembly to promptly address and resolve any concerns that may arise during implementation.
Tinubu assured Nigerians that the Federal Government remains guided by the overriding public interest, with the goal of delivering a tax system that supports economic prosperity and promotes shared responsibility across society.
