The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has emphasised that security goes beyond policing and should be seen as a collective spiritual and social responsibility.
Obasa made the remarks while delivering a lecture at the 31st Pre-Ramadan Lecture organised by the University of Lagos Muslim Alumni.
Speaking on the relationship between security, faith and civic duty, the lawmaker said protecting society requires nurturing communities, preventing oppression and safeguarding the vulnerable, adding that societal efforts toward security reflect the moral striving expected of believers.
He identified poverty as a major driver of insecurity, noting that sustainable peace cannot rely solely on law enforcement but must include compassion, fairness, transparency and humanitarian support.
According to him, acts of kindness and justice contribute to both social stability and spiritual fulfilment.
Obasa also highlighted Lagos’ diversity, saying interfaith dialogue, support for religious institutions and appropriate legislation have helped sustain peaceful coexistence in the State.
He urged Muslims to uphold justice, good governance and service to humanity, stressing the importance of helping the needy and protecting the oppressed.
The Speaker commended the University of Lagos Muslim Alumni for hosting the lecture themed “The Light Beyond: Guiding Our Souls to Paradise,” and appreciated guest speakers Dr. Ridwan Jamiu and Prof. Is’haq Oloyede for their contributions on spirituality and national security.
