Somewhere in Ikorodu, an 11-year-old boy endured pain no child should ever know, allegedly at the hands of the one person meant to protect him.
According to the Lagos State Bureau of Public Defender (BPD), the child suffered repeated physical abuse involving electric cables and other harmful objects, leaving him with multiple injuries.
But his story did not end there.
The Bureau stepped in, reported the case to the police, and ensured swift action. Following an investigation by the Nigeria Police Force at the Igbogbo Division, the mother was arrested and charged to court.
Today, that child is no longer in harm’s way.
“In line with its mandate to uphold and protect the rights and welfare of children, the Bureau ensured that the victim was promptly removed from the abusive environment and placed in a secure shelter for care and protection,” the agency said.
The case is now before a Magistrate Court in Ikorodu, with the suspect remanded pending further proceedings.
Behind the headlines is a bigger message: children must be protected, always.
“The Bureau remains committed to ensuring that vulnerable individuals, especially children, are protected from all forms of abuse,” BPD added.
No child should suffer in silence. And in this case, one didn’t.
