Ronaldo, Messi, Neymar top list of footballers with most social media influence in 2026

Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar top list of footballers with the highest social media followers.

Award-winning Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, Argentine Lionel Messi and Brazilian Neymar da Silva Santos are among the world’s top 10 footballers with the largest social media followings while leveraging it to make big bucks.

Over the years, professional footballers have strategically built their online presence, using platforms like Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), Facebook and YouTube to boost their visibility and net worth beyond the game. This has resulted in endorsement deals, relevance, and higher earnings.

Footballers who manage their platforms effectively can command huge profits from a single sponsored post. Oftentimes, this influence reflects positively on the club the player belongs to.

One of the examples of how a footballer’s social media reach can boost their club’s profile is Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia.

The transfer generated huge global attention for the Saudi Pro League, elevating the club’s profile and prestige.

The top 10 when it comes to social media influence include:

    1. Cristiano Ronaldo
As of May 2026, Ronaldo is the most-followed person on Instagram, with over 664 million followers on the platform alone.

In late 2024, he became the first person in history to surpass one billion followers across all platforms combined.

His content is majorly short-form video, and one reel featuring his iconic “Siuuu” celebration currently holds the record for the most-watched sports reel ever, with 1.4 billion views.

    1. Lionel Messi
Messi has around 511 million Instagram followers. His profile received a boost after Argentina’s FIFA World Cup victory in 2022, and his celebration photo became one of the most liked posts in Instagram history, surpassing 50 million likes within 24 hours.
    2. Neymar Jr
Neymar da Silva Santos is the most-followed active Brazilian footballer on Instagram with around 233 million followers.

His feed blends football with lifestyle content, entertainment, and personal moments.

    1. Kylian Mbappé
Mbappé has been the fastest-growing name in the top five. His move to Real Madrid in 2025 increased his reach, adding over 30 million followers in a single season. He is a brand ambassador for Nike and Hublot.
    2. Karim Benzema
Despite moving to Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia, Benzema’s following has remained strong, which reflects his global appeal.

France is one of only a handful of nations with two players in the global top 10, with Benzema joined by Mbappé.

    1. Vinícius Júnior
Plays for Real Madrid and Brazil, with his content showing match highlights, training clips, fashion collaborations, and personal moments with brand partnerships, including BOSS and Nike, reinforcing his status as an influential figure.
    2. Mohamed Salah
The Egyptian forward and Liverpool icon has 230 million combined followers across the Middle East, Africa, and Europe.

His profile regularly draws strong engagement during Liverpool’s biggest matches and international tournaments with Egypt.

    1. Paul Pogba
Despite stepping back from the peak of club football in recent years, Pogba’s 211 million combined followers show that he is deeply connected to his fans.

The French midfielder built a social media persona which encompasses fashion, music, family life, and his Islamic faith, making him one of the most appealing personalities in football.

    1. Erling Haaland
With 198 million combined followers, his online presence is built around his goal-scoring record, physical conditioning, and a dry, self-aware humour that has made him a favourite with younger audiences.

His partnership with Nike and consistent Champions League involvement keep his profile in the conversation year-round.

    1. Luis Suárez
Suárez has 181 million combined followers, and the Uruguayan striker’s social media mostly shows his celebrated years at Liverpool and Barcelona with updates from the later stages of his playing career, drawing consistent engagement from a dedicated fanbase.
